The District’s automobile technician training program has received certification from the National Automotive Technicians Education Foundation (NATEF).

Lisa Karr, director of Career and Technology Education, said this certification will benefit the 37 current students in the auto technician program, as well as future students. The District has offered the auto technician program since 1971.

"The NATEF certification certifies that our program meets strict industry standards," Karr said. "It will provide our students the opportunity to train in this type of facility, as well as lead to internships with area dealerships. Our students will also be prepared to take the ASE (Automotive Service Excellence) industry certification exams," she said.

After reviewing the district’s automobile technician training program during a recent on-site evaluation of the Technical Education Center, NATEF has awarded certification in the area of brakes, electrical electronic systems, engine performance, and suspension and steering.

This certification is recognized by the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE). After an evaluation team submits their final report to NATEF, ASE grants certification if the program meets all standards. Programs must recertify every five years. This ensures employers that students from this program are highly qualified to begin a career after high school graduation.

The evaluation process involves two major steps: An extensive sel-evaluation followed by an on-site evaluation. Program instructors, administrators, and advisory committee members rate the program on 10 standards encompassing purpose, administration, learning resources, finances, student services, instruction, equipment, facilities, instructional staff, and cooperative work agreements.

The evaluation helps target areas that are outstanding and those that need improvement, according to national standards that have been identified by representatives of the automotive industry. Programs that meet the standard are awarded an on-site evaluation.

The on-site evaluation team is conducted by an Evaluation Team Leader (ETL), as well as technicians who agree to serve as team members. The ETL is an educator who has also earned ASE certified master technician designation and has been trained by NATEF to lead the evaluation.
