Dr. Gene Buinger Announces Retirement

Dr. Gene Buinger, who has been Superintendent of Schools for the Hurst-Euless-Bedford ISD since 1999, has announced he will retire June 30, 2013. The Board of Trustees will vote to accept his retirement at the December 11 board meeting.

Buinger began his long tenure with HEB ISD in June 1999. He had previously served as Superintendent of Schools in five other communities. His career in education began in 1968 as a social studies teacher in the Blue Valley School District in suburban Kansas City.

In his 14 years with HEB ISD, Buinger has turned the District into a school system that prepares all children for college or the workforce.

"I am most proud of our closing of the achievement gap among all student groups, the introduction of unique academic programs for the global challenges that lie ahead, and the introduction of Schools of Choice," Buinger said.

Since 2004, TAKS performance by African American, Hispanic, and economically disadvantaged students increased by 20 percentage points in some areas, virtually eliminating the achievement gap.

The introduction of International Baccalaureate and the International Business Initiative offer secondary students the opportunity to excel on a global level and to gain entry to some of the world's most prestigious universities.

Schools of Choice includes Spanish Immersion, Suzuki Strings, and Core Knowledge Pre-K, which offer students exposure to new languages, music, and literature not usually available in public schools.

Other initiatives created during Buinger's tenure include Volunteers In Public Schools, Superintendent's Scholars, sister schools in Yichang, China and Mussoori, India, and the passage of a bond election in the middle of a slow economy. All of these accomplishments have helped make HEB ISD "Different by Design."

The Board of Trustees has created a process to fill the vacancy. At the December 11 board meeting they will approve a superintendent candidate profile. On Wednesday, December 12, the position of Superintendent will be open for internal applicants only through January 8, 2013. The Board will review applicants and interview qualified candidates.

If the Board is successful in selecting a new superintendent from among internal candidates, the process will conclude by mid-February. The new superintendent would immediately take on the position and Buinger would remain as a consultant to assist with the transition through June 30.

If the efforts to fill the vacancy internally are not successful, the Board will conduct a nationwide search and Buinger will remain Superintendent until a new one is appointed.
