HEB Board Wins State Award for Walking the Talk

The district's Board of Trustees has joined a select group of public school districts to win a state award for good governance. The Texas Association of School Boards (TASB) will feature the HEB ISD board in their magazine, "Texas Lone Star," for meeting tough criteria during a TASB Board Effectiveness Audit. Out of 1,050 Texas school districts, only eight school boards have won this award.

To be recognized, a district must meet several criteria:

• Complete the TASB governance audit
• Demonstrate increasing levels of student achievement
• Maintain strong ratings on the AEIS and FIRST rating systems
• Demonstrate that board members have met state requirements for professional development

The effectiveness audit is no small task and required that the board adopt continuous improvement techniques to ensure that the board could meet its goals.

"What most impresses me about the HEB board is the way they walk the talk," Bill Nemir, TASB Leadership Team Services director, said.

"Their undertaking the Audit was their part in the district's overall emphasis on continuous improvement at all levels. The board felt it couldn't ask for continuous improvement from the staff unless the board was willing to do at least the same. And they continue to make new improvement efforts. This is what leadership is all about," he said.

TASB is a nonprofit association established in 1949 to serve local public school districts.
School board members are the largest group of publicly elected officials in the state.
